What does protein folding have to do with astronomy?

Not much perhaps but dipping a paw into another food group for a moment promotes good mental health and, in this case, good health in general. This is all about a novel distributed computing project by Stanford University that could help lead to cures for Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease. We are posting it in the hope that people familiar with SETI@HOME might consider it as an alternative way to be of service...

I've been participating in the folding at home project for several years. Sure, Seti at home is kinda cool, but I figure that the folding research takes precident. Look at it this way... Seti at home is looking for a trace of an alien signal many light years and beyond. At this point in our civilzation, if we hear something we can't do anything about it, it's just hunker down and wait until we develop the ability to communicate at faster than light speed and or go to the alien source - not going to happen anytime soon. On the other hand, the folding research could lead to medical breakthroughs that could very well save my own life or the life of someone close to me. Call me stingey - the aliens can wait.

-Cary
