The Amateur Astronomer by Patrick Moore
I was browsing in a local second hand book shop when I came across this 1st edition published in 1957, the year space junk was added to Earth orbit and long before we ever saw the dark side of the moon.
It is still a gem, sadly Patrick has passed on, but you can still hear his no nonsense stataco style as you read. It still contains useful advice for the beginner and the advanced alike written in a simple style.
It is interesting to read what was known then and what we know now. But the main premise of the book was to encourage people to take up astronomy. The star and moon maps were hand drawn, the photography was black and white.
I had another copy given to me in 1969 as a Christmas present, sadly that one has dissapeared. This one I will treasure.
The cost of this gem? Aus$9. Well worth it.
