Are these guys smoking some funny weed, or is the ad in my new Orion catalogue true? An "Orion 80mm ED Apochromatic Refractor" for $429. Televue, Tak, and Stellarvue must be shaking in their boots; not to mention AP and TEC. How can they compete with a "true" apo at this price? But Wait!!! I seem to remember having an 80mm Orion Ultrascan ED and an 80mm Apogee ED "semi-apos" only to find out that neither one really had ED glass in them and they both had tremendous chromatic aberration above about 75X. Has anyone had any experience with this scope from Orion?

You're a few days late.
Search the Equipment forum for "$429" -- that should bring up the couple-three threads.
Nobody has one yet.
Orion used to call the Ultrascan a "hot ED apochromat." Righty-o.
I expect this new Synta offering to perform along the same lines -- a nice 80mm achromat. Maybe the new focuser works well.
Cheers.
