an old Meade drive corrector

smile I am trying to get some help on the feasibility of modifying my old Meade dual-axis corrector to accept an ST-4 port for autoguiding (see photo). The hardware is available from shoestring astronomy.com). I am not that experienced in electronics so I would need a step-by-step recipe. Thanks in advance.

Control handle assembly is similar to if not a generic x/y control from the radio control model industry, probably 1960/70 era. Assuming that to be correct, moving the handle most likely varies the length of a pulse to the motor being adjusted. Assuming that to be correct, most of the old analog rc systems used either 2.5 or 5 milliseconds as a center time signal, and lengthened the pulse to drive the rc actuator in one direction and shortened the pulse to go the other way: say right and left rudder for an airplane or boat.

I suspect the system you have just varies the speed of the drive motor for the RA direction; for the declination, moving the handle drives the dec motor in the direction ordered at a rate proportional to the movement of the handle. As most likely an analog system, it is unlikely it will be easy to interface with modern digital systems.

YMMV, good luck with the project.
