An opinion is just that.

I've been following all of the posts going on and the constant bashing of brands. This is all quite amusing to me as I watch all of the on-going posts. What I can't understand is why anyone would feel offended by anothers pesonal opinion of a piece of Astronomy equipment or for that case, any other material belongings.

In the past year I've graduated to what many would define as the some of the bests eyepieces around, Naglers, Panoptics and Radians. During the process have sold my Japanese Meade's, Vixen's and older Celestron "Silver Tops". From my personal experience and my vision, I've gotta say that I really miss some of the pieces that I sold off. Most of my satisfaction with owning the Televues come from the fact that I know acording to the industry and fellow astronomers that the TV's are some of the best. However, life is sometimes a little cruel and a person is born blind from one eye and has very poor vision from another. To add to that Diabetes has helped in messing with the vision in my good eye as my blood sugar level continually bounces from OK to extreme highs. In my case this hinders me from taking advantage of what should be awesome viewing from the renowned Televue's. I'm not sure why but in many cases I can actually see better from some of the less sought after eyepieces. Now, I'm not saying that the Meade's Vixen's or Silvertops are better than that TeleVue's or Takahashi's, I'm just saying that in my case It seems that I can see better with one of those "lesser" eyepieces.

Another example. My other weakness in life is the quest for high-end audio equipment, some of it that cost more than a good used late-model auto. I'm really proud of the stuff that I own and am always eager to show it off when someone comes to visit. I've been a musician all of my life and appreciated the sound of fine audio equipment. Unfortunately, some of my freinds are so tone deaf that they could care less for the sounds of my hi-fi gear. Do I get angry at the fact that they can't hear the difference or quality of sound from my stereo? Heck no! After all I purchased for my listening pleasure and not theirs.

My point with all of this is everyone here on the forums should take comments and critisism with a grain of salt because an "opinion is just that".

Clear Skies to All,

Jared,

Myself, and I am sure others know that the post about TV copied Meade and which is better was not the motive for the post. It was to get people’s dander up, to incite argument and bring out the antagonists in our mists for good verbal sparring for a few rounds. But then it just keeps running on due to a hand full of the regulars who are always willing to spar at anytime on any forum. Certainly it belonged in the off topic forum or maybe some new forum that we could figure a clever name for. But of course we all know it would not incite the riot that it does on the most popular forum. So please remember that the whole post was meant to offend somebody so others will put the gloves on.

Now back to equipment :-) As far as Naglers, Panoptics and Radians being some of the best, that is only true in a narrow defined definition. Wide field viewing with fast scopes. They are good with slow scopes to but so are good Erfles. It all depends on what you want to observe and taking into consideration what instrument you are using. A good Zeiss or Pentax ortho {or any good ortho for that matter} will surpass any of the Naglers and Panoptics on Lunar and planetary viewing every time. So I agree with you, a lesser eyepiece {lesser elements but still good quality glass and coatings} are better. IMHO.

Be well
Paul
