Basket Carrier

I can only get two of the following three in my Toyota Avalon: family, luggage, and scope. So far, I've left the scope(s) at home on family outings, but what's the fun in that?

Changing vehicles is out of the question, but I've see "basket carriers" like these http://www.accessconnect.com/hitch_mount_basket_carrier_class.htm and think they might give me the extra capacity I need, with much less cost and trouble than even a small trailer.

Do you have any experience with these?

Thanks,

Allen

Bringing this to the top: Has no one used such a hitch-mounted platform to carry a telescope?

Thanks -- Allen

Allen,
I would be reluctant to carry an expensive telescope and mount on one of the open basket-type carriers because of both security and weather exposure. I would be more inclined to go with one of the hardside Yakima or Thule ski or cargo carriers that mount on the roof. One source of these is http://www.rackattack.com/shopdisplaycategories.asp?id=13&cat=Cargo+Boxes

There is also at least one fully-enclosed hitch type cargo boxes called the StowAway II that's made for a small motor home, but should work on any vehicle with a 2" hitch receiver. See http://www.tigermotorhomes.com/options.htm
