Buying A Tak mount from Canada

I have located a mount I want to buy from a fellow in Canada. He is concerned that he will need to declare / pay duty on bringing it to the US. (He has a passport, I do not.)
We are considering a meeting in the US near the border.
Seems to me since the mount was imported by Texas Nautical, sold in the US, sold again in the US, then sold to the guy up North who had to pay to "import" it to Canada-
that no declaration or duty is necessary.
Sent an email to Customs very specifically asking this question days ago with no response. Am I surprised at this? 8)
Anyone know the answer?
Thanks and
Best wishes,
Mike

From a simple web search per US-Canada border crossing regulations: U.S. citizens do not need a passport for travel to Canada; all that is required is a photo I.D. and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate. The telescope can be considered personnal baggage regardless of whom transports it.
