Hello everyone,

After reading various recommendations on dobsonian telescopes. I narrowed it down to either the Discovery 8" f/7 or the Orion XT8. Can anyone give me advice and feedback on either one of these scopes? (i.e. workmanship, quality, performance, etc.) Thanks.

I have both, the Orion XT8 and a Discovery DHQ 8 inch. In comparing side by side I can say the following. The Discovery is more finicky than the Orion. The image quality is so close to the same that it is impossible for me to say one is better than the other. On some nights the Orion wins, on other nights the Discovery wins, on some nights there the same. One thing I do notice is the Discovery has a darker image. Perhaps becuse of its F/7 ratio verses the Orions F/6. I do think the Orion is a better built instrument and I really like the springs for tensioning. You can place some pretty heavy stuff up front without upsetting its balance. The Discovery takes a nose dive without counter weights. Both are large cumbersome scopes. As for beauty, i think the Orion wins hands down. Good luck.

Hung,

Both are great dobs. Discovery is great about substituting stuff, where Orion is a package deal. Although the Orion package is good. I would consider the Hands on Optics 8XL over the Orion. It has a better finder (8x50 vs 6x30), includes a barlow and a laser collimator for $449 delivered (XT8 is $449 + shipping). The Orion comes with a filter set, but that would not be as useful as a barlow and laser. Gary at HOO is a great guy and will work with you to get you what you need.

Be aware of the longer tube length of the Discovery f/7 (57"). If that fits in your mode of transport, I think f/7 is a great option.

Tough call. But, be assured that any of these scopes are great value and will give you lots of pleasureable viewing. There is great support from all 3 vendors. THere are also yahoo groups for both telescopes where many folks can offer great advise, both now when you are trying to decide which to get and later, once you have a telescope.

If it were me, I'd get the 8XL from Gary at Hands on Optics. Great package at a great price.
