Hi

First time poster here. I've searched the forums and can't find an answer, maybe you can help. I have an opportunity to take my 8" Mead to Powell River B.C. this next summer and would like to use it also as a spotting scope to watch the Orcas. Taking pictures isn't a problem, but using it real time the image will be inverted.

What do I need to invert the image so I can watch whales with the correct image picture?

If I'm posting in the wrong forum, Moderators please move to the right place.

Assuming you are taking digital pictures, all inversions, flips, etc., are doable on your computer. Jud

You could use it with an Amici prism instead of a mirror diagonal or use it with no diagonal if the viewing angle is comfortable.

A diagonal with a prism instead of a mirror would solve that problem. Since you would be using it on terrestrial (or marine) targets, presumably in daylight, you should experience little noticeable difference in image quality.

But for astronomical use, a mirror diagonal or no diagonal would give you better image quality.

Dave,

You will need a 45 deg. erect image prism like this:
http://www.buytelescopes.com/Products/1027-meade-928-45-degree-erect-image-prism-125.aspx

If you want to use 2" eyepieces this is also available:
http://www.buytelescopes.com/Products/26713-stellarvue-2-correct-image-45-degree-erecting-prism.aspx

There are also porro prisms available but they are much harder to find and usually quite expensive or low quality.
