Is Unitron still in business?

Hello all, I wasjust googling around for a 60mm F15 objective off of a Unitron telescope and ran into a story where someone found their grandfathers old 2 Unitron scopes.

To shorten the story someone told him that they are still in business to some extent.

The website is www.unitronusa.com . They even advertise an automatic celestial navagational system. They can be emailed and have phone numbers too

I clicked on instruments and components and they show that they have objectives. It also shows todays date at the top of the page. I'm probably not telling anyone here something new, I just did'nt know they existed any longer. I sent them a message asking about a new objective, who knows, maybe I can put a unitron objective on my Unitron scope when it arrives-if it needs it.

Unitron was always just a marketing firm here in the US. They imported scopes from Japanese companies who used subcontractors to make the lenses. Most of these were very small 1 man shops operating out of basements or small workshops all over Tokyo. Nihon Seiko was the main assembly company in Japan that actually built the finished scopes and mountings. We did some business with Nihon Seiko some time back and visited them along with Vixen and other companies when we took our trip to Japan back in the '90s. All these craftsmen and Nihon Seiko are long gone, so any telescopes that Unitron would offer now would probably come from China.

The import company in Bohemia NY still exists, but they
mainly sell industrial microscopes these days. For
many years they did have an inventory of spare
telescope parts. I was able to get some odd parts from
them 10+ years ago, but more recent reports from
others indicate there is almost nothing left. There
are sometimes noises about them getting back into the
telescope business.

You should visit the Unitron yahoo group if you have
not done so...
