I am looking for a scope for my son and considering either the celestron or meade 8" gps scopes. Any feedback will be appreciated.

I like the Celestron, if for no other reason that it's handle design makes it much easier (and safer) for a person to carry. My C8 has given me many, many wonderful views of the planets.

Hi Scott,
When you make your choice, you should give serious consideration to what type of customer service you will receive if you need any. Although some people will disagree, Celestron is clearly far superior to Meade in customer service. They do exactly what they say they will, and they won't try to sell you ridiculous "telescope insurance" that cost's hundreds of dollars and is completely unenforceable. Over the past 15 years, Celestron has worked on telescopes that I have owned that were many years out of warranty, and never charged me a cent for any of their service. They're polite, courteous and actually answer the phone if you give them a call. Having had several Meade and Celestron scopes over the last two decades, I highly recommend Celestron. I equally DO NOT recommend Meade.
Service is a serious matter when purchasing an expensive optic. Please give it proper consideration...you'll be glad you did. Regards, Kurt Horsley

Scott -

One factor that led me to the Meade 8" LX200 GPS over the Celestron was the manual Alt-Az controls. Sometimes I'll just take out the scope to view the sun, planets, etc. and I do not need to bother with any electronics. Also, I had an LX200 non-GPS that had really excellent optics. Either way you can't go too far wrong.
