Meade wedge for 8" LX200: standard or ultra?

I'm trying to decide between 2 wedges for an 8" LX200R:

(1) Equatorial wedge for 7" & 8" LX-series for $150
(2) Ultrawedge for 7"-14" LX and 10-14"RCX for $500

Given an 8" LX200, is (2) worth it over (1), or is it overkill? Specifically, what FWHM of stars are achievable with (1) vs. (2)?

Come to think of it, what are people's experiences with field de-rotators vs. wedges on small scopes such as the 8"?

thanks!

Hi Ruslan,
I used both a Super Wedge, which is the previous version of the Ultra Wedge, with my 8" LX200 and it was much more stable than the standard wedge for the 7" and 8" scopes. You could call it overkill for visual use, but with imaging the standard wedge is useless.

You can pick up a good used example of the SW here on AM for @ 250-275. Be aware that the center of gravity of my 8" LX was not exactly centered over the tripod which could cause a problem if the tripod legs are extended. I always image with them set to their lowest height and it has worked out great.

I've never used a de-rotater, but I hear they are not so good.

I used a Mettler wedge on my 8" LX200 and it worked great. I started with the meade standard wedge, and after a couple of weeks, I sold it and got this mettler. It easily handles the 8" will handle up to the 12" with no trouble.
(mine is for sale, might be sold but if you have interest, I will keep you in mind if the other potential buyer decides not to buy it.)
If you want to see my attempts at imaging, goto http://www.waynesastronomy.com and go to the images section. The equipment section shows the wedge loaded with my 8" and a televue 85 piggybacked to the 8".
