Naglers, telescopes, and selling

Hello,

I am in a bind and would like your advice. I own an 18" f/4.5 Obsession with some extras on it. I also have a case with some accessories (sp?), including my sad Naglers sad . A desperate financial situation has forced me to sell my Obsession. I know that the rule of thumb is that a person sells the scope but keeps his/her EP's. However, finances are forcing me to sell all (I literally cried when I realized I had to sell)

Here is the question: Would it be better to sell everything together, or would it bring in more money if I sold the telescope seperately and each EP seperately (or EP's together)? I can't even begin to tell you how despondent I am about this. I planned on keeping this telescope my whole life while collecting other EP's & other sky-goodies, but I can't--and the outlook appears to be that I won't be able to for a long time.

I'd appreciate your opinion. I apologize if I'm on the wrong forum--I couldn't find one that quite matched, but since I love my telescope and EP's, I thought it might be appropriate.

Kind Regards,

Chris

Chris, my suggestion is for you to sell the EPs and accessories first, individually. They are much easier to "move" (and replace), and hopefully the cash will buy you some time. If you still must sell the scope, list it and be patient.

Chris:

I hope you can turn this around quickly and can avoid selling your scope.

My thinking is that you will get more selling the scope and eyepieces separately. The scope will be a big ticket item and the eyepieces, while expensive, will be small by comparison and so they would tend to get lost in the shuffle.

On the otherhand, selling it as a batch would be the quickest...

Thats my thinking.

I'm sorry to hear about the finance situation.

My experience is that you will do better to sell the items separately. That way you are appealing to a wider market. Most guys wanting a 18" Obsession already have another scope and eyepieces. A lot of guys want a Nagler to add to their eyepieces, but can't afford the whole package.

Hope this helps.

I agree with posts stating to sell everything separately.
You might want to try to find someone that will pick it up rather than shipping too. Less hassle and less likely to have a problem. If you have to ship, be sure to pack it extremely well.
I don't suppose any of your friends are in the market? It would be nice to still have it around to look through some times. grin
I have sold 3 scopes here this year and bought one. So you can certainly find a buyer here.
Hope things work out for the best.

Hi Chris,
I see from your bio you are an ordained minister. The Lord will provide. Don't sell your equipment as you know how hard it is to replace. It will only provide a few thousand and that will go quickly. Can you investigate bankruptcy? Is there any aid you can get via your contacts in ministry? Don't be proud and take some help. It is terrible you have lost your home and all. As someone else mentioned, I think you should get some legal advice. You should not have to give up everything personal you have. Earning 75K a year indicates you must have some valuable skills. You may be able to do consulting or subcontracting. Don't give up yet!
