I have a Celestron Nextstar 6SE on the way. I have a number of two inch eyepieces which I wish to use. I already have a 2 inch refractor diagonal; but I think I might have clearance issues with the base using that diagonal with a SCT adapter. So I am planning to get another diagonal with the SCT direct attachment. Is there is anyone that has had experience with this situation and can giving me some imput on balancing the tube, etc, and any other problems I might expect to have. Thanks!!!!

Tom:

I have very little experience in this matter. I was able to use a 2 inch adapter with a 2 inch Meade refractor, dielectric 2 inch diagonal on a Nexstar 5. It looked to me though that a SCT diagonal might have clearance issues with the focuser knob.

Hi Tom,

I mounted a C8 HD OTA on my SE mount and had to use a direct-attach 2" SCT diagonal to clear the base when pointed near zenith. Even with this diagonal, the OTA had to be pushed forward far enough on its dovetail so that the diagonal wouldn't strike the base. The heavy diagonal and eyepiece helped maintain balance well enough for the mount to work although it was struggling a little with all the weight. You should have less of a problem with a 6" SCT OTA and might be able to use your conventional diagonals.
