O-III and a dark sky site

Recently I had my first experience using a O-III filter in the city, and was blown away at the contrast it provided when viewing planetary nebula.

My question for this group is if the filter would have any significant benefit on contrast when used at a dark sky site?

My expectation is that the filter would have little effect since the site is a "dark sky" location, so the only light to filter would be the stars within the field of view.

It will have significant effect.

Jeff,

No actually the OIII filter and other nebula filters are still very useful at a dark site. Essential equipment really. "Don't leave home without them". Even at the best dark site in the world, there is enough sky glow to interfere with nebula views. The sky is never truly dark like a cave. And of course most dark sites aren't pristine anyway.

It will still give a huge improvement at a dark site. As others
mention, there is still very significant sky background even at a
"dark" site.

Works very well indeed, and I have used an OIII on scopes as small as 6". Try it on NGC 7000 at a dark site, you will be impressed.
