Just received my 2" Pol. filter ( intend to use it on the Bright phase of the moon ) lost my night vision for 15 min. last time the un-filtered "death ray" arc welded my retina to the back of my eyeball.. here's my question: I have not been able to field test this 2" Pol. filter on the Moon yet...maybe next week... anyway when I turn the 2 plates on the filter I see no noticable change in shading, glass remains clear, conversely on my 1.25" pol. filter, when I turn it.. the clarity changes from clear to dark smoke color... My " is a Victar-XL 48mm. PL. thanks for any info... John M

If the two pieces are really polarizing filters, rotating one relative to the other should certainly change the transmission. There should be a position where the light coming through them is quite noticeably attenuated.
