Telescope as telephoto

I ran into this link on Usenet (rec.photo.digital.slr-systems) about an f/4 1700mm lens. The claim is that this custom Zeiss optic cost ~$200,000!

The question is, how well would a telescope be able to compete against a monster like that... or what would it take to compete? My first thought is a 17" f/4 dob with a Paracorr. What says you?

I have done a bit of digiscoping with my 12.5 inch F/4.06 and a Paracorr. I think the issues with either a Newtonian or the Zeiss are getting a good focus and the fact that rarely does the atmosphere surport the sort of resolution possible. Certainly the newtonian is both more affordable and more portable... The Zeiss weighs 256 Kilograms, add another hundred pounds or more for the tripod... just aiming the thing at the bird will be a major effort

An amazing lense... but at 600lbs it seems almost "nonsense" unless shooting STILL objects...

A beautiful piece of equipment nonetheless... 8)
