Read about these filters, thought I might get one for my 17 Nagler, to protect that honking lump o' glass on the bottom. Question is: is it worth bothering? It doesn't sound like it would lose much light, but it seems to be simple optical glass, and I wonder about the effect on the image quality. Any thoughts?

I've had the NT4 17mm for years and the bubble on the bottom is protected fine by the barrel! Use your equipment and stop worrying! regards Greg N
(and don't add even more glass in front of this multi-element lens just for protective purposes...use a filter if you need a filter) my 2c, GN

Yes...forget about 'em. Many of these filters are poor optically and all are unneeded if you treat your eyepiece with reasonable care.
