Vixen GP-DX vs new Celestron CG-5?

Hi. I've been thinking about getting a C9.25 OTA to put on my vixen GP-DX. It has the Skysensor2000PC Goto controller which I really like. I have seen that Celestron has beefed up the CG-5, stating that there are two sets of ball bearings, etc., now in the mount - even selling it now with the C-11 on it!
Does anyone have experience comparing these two mounts? My use is for visual and "non-mission-critical" ccd photography, not yet in the market for a heavy-duty like a G11,etc. So GP-DX or CG-5? Thanks for any insight.

I've owned both mounts. Sold the GP-DX a few years back only because I wanted a beefier mount for imaging. Picked up the ASGT mount last year. As to handling weight, I'll put the two in the same category. As to imaging and accuracy, the GP-DX gets the nod. That being said, I don't think the ASGT gives up much to the GP-DX. It's very solid and a good value for the money. Celestron recently put up a firmware download for the ASGT that addresses most of the problems that have been reported.

Bottom line? If you have a GP-DX, hang on to it. If you're looking for a new GP sized mount, the ASGT is hard to beat.

Alan,

Trust me, keep your GP-DX. I have the same config. as you do and am very impressed with its imaging capabilities. Your C9.25 should have no problems at all on the GP-DX. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for".
