Short eye relief and eyelashes

Just checking to see if others just put up with this or not. I just took delivery of a UO HD Ortho, 5mm. I don't have the eye relief spec on this but this is a first for me. When I view with this eyepiece, I have to get so close that my eyelashes are pressed against the eyepiece.

Now, it provided a pretty good view but this was uncomfortable. Is this typical of this type of eyepiece? I also have a 4mm TeleVue Radian, but it has a very long eye relief so I have nothing else to compare this to.

Thanks,

Don

Your Radian has spoiled you. Orthos actually have pretty decent eye relief for an older design, but when you get down less than about 10mm focal length, you are indeed in eyelash-land (depending on your lashes). It's better than a similar Plossl, though.

I use only barlowed eyepieces with longer focal lengths (and thus better eye relief) or eyepieces designed for long eye relief. That way I'm actually willing to look through the eyepiece for an extended time, which is more important for seeing things, in my experience, than that last extra bit of contrast.

You can figure that the Eye relief will be about equal to the focal length with Orthos and Plossls under 10mm. 8O So, yes , eyelashes can be a problem. Just pluck them out! wink

OK, thanks Floyd and Jim! I thought so but am pretty new to this hobby and I hadn't seen this mentioned so I just wanted to know if it was normal. Guess I will stay with the Radians unless I can find something that looks significantly better in the Ortho.

Guess the speel checker doesn't look at the subject line. Just noticed that I transposed i and e in relief.
