The best way to ship a mirror?

I've been talking with one of the AM advertisers about buying his 16" Newtonian. He does not have the original packing materials. We are trying to figure out the best way to pack the mirror for shipment. It looks like a thorough cleaning would need to come first. What should the surface be covered with to protect it from packing materials? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Good seeing,
Rikki

Hi Bill,
Agreed that Kleenex brand, unsented, no additive tissues are very good. I use them all the time on mirrors to remove the final water droplets after cleaning. I will sometimes use them to remove any small haze after cleaning. Never had a scratch from using them for this as long as the mirror was clean.
The reason for using the tissue paper, is that you can get it large enough to cover a mirror completely and stretch it tight. Then with the cardboard cover, it is not going to be scratched unless there is a penetration of the box and packing.
There is special tissue for wrapping lenses available, but I think that the stuff you can buy locally is fine. But you don't really want anything riding on the coating while in the box, the vibration during shipping can be amazing! wink
