8" f/15 under construction.....

Started by Greg Shaffer, 01/12/2011 12:31PM

Been gathering up the parts for sometime now and have everything on hand now except for 9" tube itself.

Been thinking on the best way to construct the baffle system and it hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday.....

Use carbon graphite arrow shafts cut to the proper lengths to space out the baffles properly, can cut them to lenght, glue in the inserts, drill holes in the baffels and simply insert them sandwiched between the shafts, three shafts per section, ending up with an all in one assembly that I have just slide into the tube and anchor at each end of the assembly.....super lightweight, strong and already black.....

Based on my calculations I will end up with 5 baffels.....using thin aluminum sheet for the baffels themselves.....I dont see any reason it wouldnt work and work well.....any thoughts?

Thanks
Greg

Just don't forget to remove the fletching and those razor-sharp broadheads!

Seriously though - that's a clever use of an off-the-store-shelf solution to what is normally a "weighty" problem. I'm believe the dozen or so baffles in my 6" F/15 Fecker tube assembly add significantly to its weight. They're glued-in, and make it difficult to access the ota's center.

Greg..have you made the baffles themselves yet?
When I made the baffle system for my 10"f/15..I used 3 half round finishing trip strips 12ft long and I used 5 wood stove chimney wall flanges as the baffles themselves.

Your use of arrow shafts is a good one...I considered it myself..but I needed edge venting of the baffles so my 12" tube could vent past the baffles.

Good luck and post images as you go if you can.

And nearly 4 years later the project gains momentum after gathering some dust smile.....back to work on it. Tomorrow will be building the mock up to get measurements for the tube.....

Setup a final mockup this afternoon to test with my binoviewers since we got clouded out last time before I could check the binoviewers. Want to setup for it to work natively with the BV's with no barlow or OCS. I would rather do it with a tape measure than a calculator smile

Final testing and measuring done last Sat night....ready to order the tube and proceed with the build. Pic of me staring at the moon with binoviewers at 264x....amazingly good considering the open construction and white'ish wood construction scattering light all over the place......

Tonight we got 1st light with the 8" F/16 build.....and I do mean LIGHT lol. No baffles yet and no black paint in the tube. Lots of reflections but it works.....and comes to focus with the right range of travel on the focuser. I was expecting the Losmandy GM200 mount to complain about such a long scope but was rock steady when focusing. However shortly after dark the wind started getting pretty breezy.....it DIDNT like that LOL.

Have to make an pier extension for the big Losmandy tripod. We put a pair of 8" concrete blocks under each leg for an extra 16" in height and could have used another 6" or so.....

That's a StellarVue 80ED hanging off the side for a finder......

Cut the 5 baffles last night on a mill with a boring bar. We stacked and bolted them together and cut the OD to size.

We then proceeded to cut the ID to a knife edge starting with the largest 1st while still bolted together. 1st two are cut here.....
