Beginners Pier question...

I have a 8" LX200 I never use due to the hassle of setup and alignment. I am trying to investigate whether I can install a pier in my yard that can be removed and installed while keeping polar alignment. My wife would not be too keen on having a permanent post in the way.

I was thinking I could pour a small pad with mounting bolts for the pier and just unbolt and rebolt as needed leaving my wedge mounted. I think the answer is that I would have PA after moving it. But I just didn't know if there was another option.

Thanks

Gary:

I think if you made the mount carefully enough you would not have to polar align your scope each time. One way to do this would be to have the plates machined and add a couple of locating pins to maintain the alignment. Precision ground pins in holes that have been bored and reamed should do it..

Of course you would have to be careful to be sure the rest of the mount could not move...

>>>Much depends on how much of a demand you put on the go-to unit. If you're chasing fairly bright objects and can live with 30 to 60 minutes of pointing error careful marking of the tripod position could do the trick

I don't know for sure but the fact that he is using a wedge and concerned about PA, I figured photography is what this is about.

If you go with a pier, then go with the pier as scope mount only. Piers are cool! And they work really well.

Skip the bird bath, bird feeder, bird house or any other application. You really don't want anything birds leave behind to be around your pier, or the insects that can associate there either.
