Declination adjustment on Meade ETX 90

Hi- I am a total newbie. Just took delivery of my first real scope, a used ETX-90 bought on Ebay. In testing it to see if all of the controls worked, I find that when the scope is horizontal to ground (Lat 90), the declination controls will lower the scope, but will not raise it. The dec lock is definitely off, and the scope will move freely up and down when adjusted by the lens barrel. Is this normal or is something broken? This is an older model. Any input would be appreciated.

I wish I could help, I do have an ETX 90, but sans the tracking mount. Maybe some one else has an idea here.

It haws been a while since I owned an ETX-90 RA so I am a bit foggy here but in general, for the declination adjustment to work, the declination axis must be locked. Otherwise, it is just spinning freely.

Also, my foggy recollection is that this declination adjustment is a "tangent arm" rather than a geared design. Tangent arms use a screw on a lever arm and have a limited amount of travel so at some point the tangent arm must be reset. It is possible that you are at one end of the travel.

But first, try tightening up the dec lock and see if that helps.

Best wishes
