Hi everyone,

hope this is the right forum to ask this. Does anyone know of a book they could recommend on double stars? What I'm after is a book that lists the doubles in each constellation with their magnitudes and separations? Lots of books contain bits of this info but I've never seen one that had it all?

all the best

Tim

Online will have closer to it all.

Two book format are Burnhams (frequently available in the classifieds here) and Double Stars for Small Telescopes by Sissy Hass.

I have made good use of "Double Stars for Small Telescopes" by Sissy Haas (Sky Publishing Corp.). It covers all celestial constellations, in your part of the world as well as up here in the northern hemisphere. But -- as the title implies -- if you're looking for doubles with sub-arcsecond separations or primaries dimmer than about magnitude 8, this book won't accommodate you.
By the way, there is an Astromart forum for double stars, which may be a better place for your inquiry.

Hi Tim

Have you seen the SAC double star data base? This isn't a book but it sure has a lot of info including a 39 page list of doubles sorted by constellation. It is available in several formats including Excel so you can sort and filter as you see fit. I printed a copy and stuck it in plastic liners for field use. With a decent star atlas, it's all I use

In addition to books, do you know about this:

A wonderful project that I had a hand in birthing, at least. ;-)

In addition to the sources already mentioned, _The Night Sky Observer's Guide_ has lists of binary stars for each constellation.

Tim,

You should also be aware of the double star forum under this site. There you will learn many interesting things from dedicated double star observers.

"A Field Guide to Double Star Observing" by Joe DalSanto is another good source.
