Star Chart

Any advise on star charts for field use. Sky Atlas 2000 Laminated Field version is looking like the winner so far, but the Deluxe version Laminated is tempting. Black on White or White on black? Old eyes are getting tired under red light and clear skies. Your comments would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,
jay

I have the Deluxe edition, non laminated, black stars on white background. I much prefer it to the field edition, white stars on black background. My field edition stays at home and never goes in the field. So much for the name!

--If you've got a large scope, the Sky Atlas might not go deep enough for you.--

Good point!
I opted for the MSA a few years back, for this very reason. I have never regretted it. My SA2000 is now in limbo.

Check the classifieds here. Deeper field atlases are frequenty available. They are all pretty cool!

Personally I prefer to use a computer program such as MegaStar, and then print out charts to the depth I want.

Cheers

I have and love the Sky Altlas 2000 laminated field version (White stars on black background).

I only have an 8" SCT and a 4" refractor. I have two brackets on the legs of my tripod that I can put Sky Atlas in and it's right below me with a red light on it. Very easy to use. Plus, with the black background the red light does not reflect alot off it.

I don't know why but black stars on a white background is disorienting to me...though I've printed out charts from software that are black on white and I'ved used them. But I prefer white on black...and with the laminated field version, I NEVER worry about any damage to it from dew, or spilled drinks, etc.
