Here is Clear Sky Clock for North Carolina:
http://www.cleardarksky.com/csk/prov/North_Carolina_map.html?Mn=astronomical
After you chose the clock, click on it, then on [Light Pollution Map] below. You can link any spot from there with a road map.
The best free tool you can get smile

Rich,

Try the "Dark Sky Finder" website (http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/) that mashs up Google Maps and a light pollution map. It's really helpful and I've learned a few thinks, like where the dark sky is in the East. One surprise: The Pamlico Sound coastal area of North Carolina is pretty dark.

George,

Thanks for posting that site. I've recently resigned from my group since they like to change locks at our dark sky site without letting anybody know. This gizmo, along with yahoo maps (which shows higher quality satellite imagery in rural areas) has allowed me to see several promising sites. I'll probably be contacting a couple of farmers soon.
