Dove with deformity

Has anyone seen this type of deformity on a dove before? This is one of two young (just out of the nest) doves I found on my deck a couple of weeks ago. Both birds had deformities on their head. I caught a glimpse of the mother and she looked okay, though I didn't get a very good look to be absolutely sure.

Just curious. We have lots of doves around the house and I've never seen anything like this.

It looks like the cutaneous form of "pox." Pox is caused by a virus and usually occurs in southern latitudes but I have seen it in my homing pigeons at 43 degrees north. This early in the year you must be south of that? The pox virus is similar to the virus of human smallpox but don't worry, it can not be transmitted to humans. If it can eat and drink the lesions should dry up and fall off in about ten days. Otherwise it's cat chow :-(
