yes they are loud and can do quite a number on a tree or stump . Mother natures jack hammers.

A lovely photo of one of my favorite birds. My parents yard bordered a mature woodland, so they were frequent visitors to our backyard, and I've enjoyed them for most of my life.

I have often wondered what all the hammering is for. when they start hitting the hard woods like live oak it sound more like a firing range than a park.
