My parents are mixed. They got married when my dad was stationed in England in the 1960s (I was born in 1963). When it came time for us to return to the States there were certain states they could not be stationed because of laws against inter-racial marriage. We ended up in New Hampshire. At the same time that he couldn't go to certain states he was still very much allowed to go to Vietnam.

To add to this a bit, my grandparents on both my dad's and mom's side were opposed to inter-racial marriage. There are still many extended family members on both sides that are against it. I can tell you first hand it's not just a white republican form of bigotry.
