Gravity Waves Detected

Hi All,

Very surprised that no-one has yet started a discussion of the first detection of gravity waves. This is a MAJOR breakthrough! It has the potential to rival the first use of the telescope.

Several of the faculty here are associated with LIGO and I had a VERY minor association with the studies done in WA by David Blair. I had a feeling that something like this was in the air for the past few weeks as the faculty members and post-grads involved were suddenly very secretive. Expect a few Nobel prizes being awarded for this in the next few years.

With a completely new window now opened on the universe, we are no longer dependent on just light. Who knows what we will discover over the next few decades!

If Trump or Palin figured it out it would be talked about a lot more.

It is a big thing, but I would like to hear more about it.

It's an IMMENSE deal! The signature of two black holes merging 1+ Billion LY away (and ago). And said signature lasting for only a few minutes --- very Very COOL! I believe two independent interferometers cross-confirmed the event. It also amuses/pleases me that Einstein predicted this effect/signature like a hundred years ago. And ironically, that he got his Nobel Prize for the Photoelectric Effect ... because scientists of the time thought Relativity was nifty --- but not THAT nifty...
