How did this guy get his hands on fighter planes in order to sell them to the Iranians?

Older military aircraft like the F-5 and T-38 are available as warbirds, a lot of which are flown on the airshow circuit. I know of an F-4, owned by the Collings Foundation, that flies on the airshow circuit, and until a few years ago, a couple of F-104's also, until they contracted out to do work for NASA. When the Navy retired all of their F-14's a few years ago, they supposedly made it illegal to sell them for non-military use by anyone, but specifically to keep them and spare parts out of the hands of the Iranians, who also fly F-14's purchased prior to the fall of the Shah.

Not only that, but you get more severe penalties if you happen to kick a dog! I'm sure he will never serve anywhere near 40 years, and pay less than half the proposed fine. Why? Because it will be called "illegal exporting technology" and not what it is...
It is treason, plain and simple...

If convicted, Knapp would face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine.

John P. Kelleghan, special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in a news release. "The export of technology to Iran is prohibited so that our innovations cannot be used to harm Americans or our allies."

He cannot be working alone and must have pretty good clearance... So there is a lot more beneath the surface.
