I'm spending ten lovely fun filled days in Krakow, Poland and this is what I’ve learned so far…
1. Sidewalks are for parking cars on.
2. Pickles, tuna and whole kernel corn are legitimate items to put on pizza.
3. Breakfast is usually a sandwich with cold cuts and cheese along with pea salad or deviled eggs.
4. There is no such thing as a window with a screen on it.
5. Pedestrians do not have the right of way unless you are in a crowd of 10 or more.
6. People in Krakow are genuinely good people. I saw a truck driver stop in the middle of the street to retrieve a blind man who had wandered into the middle of the road. He gave him to me thinking I was Polish, blurted some instructions at me and jumped back in his truck and was gone. Luckily the blind man spoke some English and I was able to help him navigate to his destination unharmed.
7. It is almost impossible to find a Diet Coke, but Coke Zero is everywhere and is about the only diet soda widely available.
8. You can buy three different kinds of spirits; Vodka, Vodka and Vodka.
9. In Poland a quarter pounder with cheese is a McRoyal.
10. For some reason, Polish women love to dye their hair red.
11. There is a public campaign to encourage people to conserve water, but you could flush a full-grown male sheep down their toilets.
12. You cannot spot an American just by looking at them, because I’ve had a half-dozen or more poles start speaking to me on the street not realizing that I’m American.
13. You can get a really excellent lunch for 10 zlotys or about $3.60
14. It's really difficult to get a drink with ice in it.
15. When a plane lands in Poland they clap and you disembark where you landed and take a bus to the terminal.
16. They do not clean up after their dogs, so be careful where you step.
17. No fire alarms in hotels. Maybe this is why they don’t have screens on windows.; makes it easier to jump.
18. You can't unlock your door from the inside without your key, so leave it in the lock in case you need to make a hasty exit.
19. There is no such thing as a washcloth; I have resorted to using one of my white socks.
20. A four-star hotel in Poland does not have AC, an ice machine, a pool or really any kind of amenities other than a restaurant.
21. They have Lotto!
That’s all for now. I’m sure there will be more to learn…
