I'm curious, did you read the conclusion of the article?


Conclusions

Both previous infection and vaccination provide substantial protection against COVID-19. Vaccination of previously infected individuals does not provide additional protection against COVID-19 for several months, but after that provides significant protection at least against symptomatic COVID-19.

So, yes "natural immunity" does count, but like any immunity, it wanes over time, and after that, your best bet to avoid infection and severe illness is to get vaccinated.

I don't think this article is the gotcha moment you think it is. Read the Results section carefully. Even it says:

Among previously infected subjects, a lower risk of COVID-19 overall was not demonstrated, but vaccination was associated with a significantly lower risk of symptomatic COVID-19 in both the pre-Omicron and Omicron phases.

In other words, vaccination is still your best bet.
