Elephant Trunk Bicolor

Hi,

I've been clouded over for for awhile now and have not been able to collect anymore data on this one so I decided to go ahead and process up what I had and see how it came out.

I ended up with many different versions, narrowband is really lots of fun to play with during processing grin

I am going to post 3 versions of this each with some differences in color. They each contain the same data,28x600s Ha 28x600s OIII.

The Ha was much, much better than the OIII and I struggled to get the colors I was hoping for and never really did.I was expecting a bit more Red honestly but evertime I tried to get it the image would take on a more purplish appearance.Maybe the OIII was simply not strong enough compared to the Ha,or maybe I just have a lot to learn about processing narrowband smile

Well, here's my first attempt at a bicolor,I averaged the Ha and OIII to create the green channel on this first one.The color is probably not correct but I think it holds the most detail of the lot.

Thanks for looking and I am always open to suggestions!

Jason

Here's the 2nd one.

Same data with a slightl different processing.

This 3rd image I used Steve Cannistras method to create the Green channel.

I ran into clipping on the shadows of the green with this one but it has colors a bit more like what I was expecting, not quite the Red I was hoping for.

I like all of these, maybe the third one best. My take on narrow band is since it it generally "false" color, you can play with it until you get what you like. And it looks like you have some great data to play with. Of course another option for your third channel is SII... or something else.

Ok,I have one more, promise it's the last one wink

This time I created a synthetic Blue channel, this gave me more of the Red I was hoping for.I then added the Ha back in as Luminance so I guess this one is Ha,Ha,OIII,Sb.

I like this one the best so far,it reminds me of a Ha,RGB image.

Thanks for looking at all these grin

Jason,
Nice image and great detail. I think I like the first best of the lot.

Hi Jason,

Spectacular! I know you like the fourth version the most, but I actually prefer any of the first three over the fourth. The details in all are terrific, I'm not sure what you were concerned about with the OIII - that tends to be pretty thin in emission nebulae anyways.

I have no suggestions, just a comment: 8O

Very interesting experiment and great image Jason. In all the color combinations grin
