Would the Orion Starshoot Deep Space Color Imager be a good choice for first time imaging? I am using a 10" Newtonian.
Any suggestions or observations would be greatly appreciated.

Rikki,
I've never used the Starshoot, but take a look at Pat's post just prior to yours. He, and others, capture great stuff with the camera. Actually, it's great that there are so many options, and low-cost ones at that, to get started with nowadays.

Rikki, welcome to THE DARK SIDE... 8) (of Imaging, that is...)

There are MANY variables to consider when getting into Astrophotography...

Your 10" newtonian, what mount is it using?
How much money do you have budgeted for this CCD purchase?
What do you plan on shooting with it?

I bought the Orion Starshoot because of price/performance, since it was selling for $399, and I sincerely believe that there is nothing better than that camera at that price range. It is a pity that Orion stopped distributing this camera, but supposedly they will be coming out with a replacement product SOON... (so they say)

Stu's suggestions are very good indeed, Ron Wodaski's book is a great one to read, get it if you can..., and try to join a club and see what's involved in imaging, if at all possible.

Here is a small sample of some shots I took with it...
