Please forgive my simpleton question. I know people like to take multiple short exposures of the same object and stack them to show more detail. Would there be any benefit to taking one short exposure, creating 100 copies of it on your computer and stacking them?

No. The reason stacking works is that noise is random and signal isn't. When you stack images, noise cancels out and signal sticks out.
