Have been chasing the proverbial "Snipe" for days now. Sony discontinued the manufacture of the ICX098AK, but the ICX098BQ CCD substrate is NOT on their discontinued list. They also indicate in the substrate lists that the BQ is a substitute for the AK. In trying to find out who they are selling the BQ's to that might be manufacturing webcams, I came across info which appears that Sony's own NEW webcam & video cams may contain the ICX098BQ CCD substrate. Sony has not confirmed this....from loosely scattered info on the new Sony webcam, the total pixel count and general user discription appears to match the BQ CCD substrates without specifically saying so. More than one model may be carrying this substrate as a webcam and $90.00 video camera. I am waiting for a reply from Sony....it could be a loooong wait. Anyone know for sure?.

You can still get the Legendary ToUcam Pro from here: http://store.yahoo.com/pocketscope/toucam.html I just got one last week from them and it was brand new in the box. I am now waiting for my scope adapter from Steve Mogg. I'll be interested to know if you find a new manufacturer using the same chip, because I will eventually want to get another one. The nice thing about the ToUcam is that the lens screws right off.

Alan- The specifications I have indicate the 750K is <2 lux, and may or may not be Sony ICX098BQ. The 740K is <1 lux and IS the ICX098BQ. Of the two I would go for the 740 to be sure of what I get..... -Larry

Steve, I have only looked a little at the two chips. My impresson right now is that the BQ has "still image" capability resolution that the AK cannot compete with. If that is the case, it would account for the BIG demand for the PCVC740K webcam and would make deep sky countless times better in detail. Color responses I have noticed, was not compared between the two. I am still waiting for the only chip I that have been able to get....a PCVC675K, which I will modify for controlled shutter.
