finally got around to setting up to digitize old video astronomy stuff for modern image processing. Tom Dobbins and I were dreaming about more computer power to overlay 4 to 8 images without the computer crashing back then - and a gigabite of hard drive was "the holy grail " (and u would never run out of memory)- back then the state of the art was a single frame grab with a snappy. So today I did my first one- Shoemaker Levy on Jupiter 7/20/94! Taken with a 10"f/6 Newt using eyepiece projection to a Supercircuits B&W video camera and recorded on Hi8 video tape. a short segment was digitized using an Arcos and about 2000 frames were processed in Registax6. The processing is limited both because the seeing was terrible(it had just stopped raining and I was imaging between the clouds) and the dynamic range was limited because it was rather dim on the tape. It took a bit of finesse because dim images tend to ring when wavelets are applied. Over all I'm pleased.
