Meade LX 200 12 soft case

Hi all. I have a new Meade 12 LX200 GPS UHTC. I do not want to spend $500 on the JMI case and have been looking at the soft cases by Meade and Sirus. I will always be transporting the scope to view. I am not worried about hard v. soft (I will not be shipping the case or throwing it around), but am concerned that lifting the scope by myself repreatedly via handles or a shoulder strap will cause the foam to bend and eventually tear or break. Does anyone have any experience with either of these soft cases? Including durability, moisture protection, and ease of use? Also, any suggestions for a case for the giant field tripod?

I appreciate any help.

Gregg:

I know someone who has just purchased the 7" Meade Maksutov and has the fabric case. He does not recommend it. Given the greater weight of the 12" (73lbs) I imagine that the fabric case would not be adaquate for very long. I also have a new 12" LX200 GPS UHTC. I had a local cabinet maker make a nice wooden box for about $170.00 which accepts the Meade supplied foam. I added some garden cart wheels and wheel barrow style handles and it works very well. The only draw back being it is rather large and requires a pickup to move

Hi Greg
I also, have the Meade 12LX200/GPS. I bought a soft case
from Scopehead Bill in Vegas, that was a Meade reject for
$55 or $60. It was brand new. I put a thin piece of
3/8 ply on the inside of the case, and the foam went
over that. Now - - -with the 3/8 ply on the inside, I
bought some 2" caster wheels, and mounted them on the
outside of the case. I also bought a long luggage handle
that sits about 12", when its extended, to pull the case
from the inside of my house, to my pickup truck. Its like
pulling a piece of luggage around, now. Sure beats the
$500 they want from JMI. When I hit the lotto, might
consider one of them, but in the mean time, this works
GREAT!]
