Curved image chip opens new possibilities

Those old film cassette astrographs may be getting a new lease on life soon if the article published in Nature this past week can yeild practical imaging chips

Sorry, I didn't see the yahoo news blurb. I read the actual article in Nature. The Yahoo posting doesn't do the article justice with respect to the actual level of achievement in solving the technical details of curved optical detectors. Making it to the cover article of Nature is no small feat. This is not an article whose focus was to produce an artificial human eye, but one to that demonstrated the feasibility of extending the manufacturing of non-planar micro electronics into the field of optical sensors. The article both demonstrated a working low resolution model and a path to a full blown high resolution sensor. I recommend the full Nature article to the Telescope Making group and the rest of Astromart news readers.
