Will Future Telescopes Be Able To See Alien City Lights?

If an alien civilization builds brightly-lit cities like those shown in this artist's conception, future generations of telescopes might allow us to detect them. This would offer a new method of searching for extraterrestrial intelligence in our Galaxy.

Comments:

Based on our experience, any advanced civilization has a window of a few hundred years before they burn through their indigenous hydrocarbons and otherwise denude their planet ala Easter Island. You'd have to be pretty lucky to be looking for their planet when the light from that brief fiesta of entropy reaches our own fair orb. Unless you are one of those nuts who believe that energy can be accessed directly from the quantum vacuum or other uber-alternative sources (like me).
I'll bet if we look hard enough, and with enough imagination, we may even be able to see a network of canals between the cities.

Guy

Jason Pociask said:

Based on our experience, any advanced civilization has a window of a few hundred years before they burn through their indigenous hydrocarbons and otherwise denude their planet ala Easter Island. uber alternative source would be non-carbon based life, right?
