Collimator.......

Hello everyone,
I am soon to be aquiring a 15" Obsession and have been weighing out the pro's and con's of collimators. The two brands I have been looking at are Kendrick and Glatter. Reguardless of brand, I will be buying the 2 inch model. I do have a few questions that maybe some of you could help me with.....Can you justtify spending the extra on the Glatter holigraphic collimator? Will it make collimation that much more acurate? If so, how? I want to stay in the red spectrum, so do I buy the 650nm or 635nm collimator? Can you see the 650 in the day? Barlow or no barlow?

Thanks much,
Jay

I really like the holographic collimators... they make aligning the secondary under the focuser as well as a non-center spotted primary a whole lot easier. Given a choice, I'd get a holographic. I'd recommend finding a club member with one and giving it a try.

BTW... the Glatters are very nice. They seem more "industrial/ solidly built" than the Kendrick's...

Don't know if this helps smile

Discussions on collimation and collimators are usually turgid, but the one currently under weigh at Yahoo big dob group is remarkably clear and gives a good picture of what you need and what you don't need. Lots of consensus emerged.

My input is of the laser collimators I've used they are subject to the tolerance of the focuser and the collimator. They tend to flop down in the focuser and throw things off, so ultimately a star collimation is absolutely necessary. But it gets you close enough to start, I wouldn't spend too much.
