comparison

Hey everyone, I thought I'd post a pic I made, this is a comparison of 3 objects and how they look to ME in my backyard, with my eyes. The scopes were a 90mm ETX, a 6 inch F5 newt and a 10 inch F5.6 dob. The reason I thought I'd post this, is when I first got into astronomy, I wondered "how" much difference aperture makes, and I wished for something like this so I could at least get a rough idea. Hopefully this will help someone get an idea of how things look in different size scopes.
Remember, this is how things looked to ME in MY sky conditions, (ie light pollution level, transparencey etc.) and with my eyes, but at least should be close to reality.

Let me know what you think!
Take care and clear skies!
Ron

Great comparison, and quite accurate to my eyes. I have an ETX-90 as my small scope, an 8" SCT as my main one, and I had a 10" dob at one point. That is about how it looks.

That's neat! The major "flaw" (in my eyes, my experience) is that the central hole in the ring is much less obvious in small scopes (looks more disk-like), and I think M13 looks better in a 6 inch, but this is a neat approximation. Does the dumbell really look that good in your scope? Nice!

Neat comparison! I was out observing last night with my 10" Dob and TV85. The views look a lot like your 10" and 6". Don't think M13 was quite that bright in my 10" but the resolution is about right.

Nice to see the comparisons side-by-side. What's the relative magnification in the 3 telescopes?

Hey Bill,

The dumbell might be too bright in the 10 inch I did there, but the others look real close to my eyeballs. It looks pretty good in our 6, but in the 10 there's so much there it kinda washes out the dumbell shape a bit. smile

Thats right, you have that 8000 watt, burn your face bright monitor haha

This comparison though was meant more to show the difference between, not be accurate to actual brightness. It's hard since I used CCD images and edited them, CCD's capture things different the brain/eye combo. does, but I tried to be as accurate as I could :-)

Take care!
Ron
