Eyepiece Cases Foam

I recently bought an eyepiece case from Orion and what a disappointment. Their biggest case, a medium was not large enough for my 2 inch pentax eyepieces and the plastic latches were so flimsy and insecure that when I picked up the case the lid popped open and $1700 worth of eyepieces came falling out. Fortunately it was over my bed. Anyway I found what I think is a super deal on a finely crafted metal case at Home Depot for only $20. It is slightly padded and has moveable partitions, but no foam. Does anyone know where I can find some of the type of foam that normally is used in eyepieces cases. I can probably cut it to fit my eyepieces and don't need the removable precut hole type. Thanks ,John

Here are several sources:

I know that several members recommend Foam by mail.

I use Vanguard VGP13 cases and found this source for pick-n-pluck foam.
You get 2 pcs 2" thick that fit the case perfectly for $19.95

Pentax you say? Why foam? I keep posting this when this subject comes up to remind folks that foam is not necessary. It has certain disadvantages, like getting cruddy. A friend uses an insulated box with plexiglass shelves; to keep the eyepieces warm and dew free he puts a microwaved foot warmer (bean bag) into the bottom.

In the design below the compete Pentax line is housed as well as some other eyepieces and items such as diagonals. No caps, no bolt cases, everything stays clean when the box is closed. The heating strip is there in case I decide I need it for anti-dew purposes.

One item of note: when I was designing the box I was faced with making an "assortment of two inch and 1.25 inch holes" which might not be the right choice as the collection changed, or making everything two inch. I decided to go with all-two inch and to get each eyepiece its own adapter. This has made field use much simpler, and it's practical for the box, any eyepiece goes in any hole, as do the diagonals. Stellarvue makes the best 1.25 to 2" adapters for Pentax especially, with the long barrels.

good luck,

Greg N

Hi John, You have had a lot of good suggestions, I like the camera shop option if one is available to you.

If you ever need another case you may want to try Walmart. I bought the aluminum pistol case with the pluck foam already installed complete with locks and metal latches and handle. It will hold all the eyepieces you need to carry with you. It is the size of a brief case and very sturdy.

For now try the most convenient option for the foam you need in the case you now have.

Good Luck, Darrell
