I told you folks I'm fickle. One minute I perfectly satisfied and the next I just gotta have a new scope.Momma is going to kick my arse.I just ordered a new Zhumell 12" dob based on all the reviews I've been reading from some of you guys so its your fault and I did'nt have anything to do with it-thats what I'm gonna tell Jeannie my wife.So for the next 8 weeks I'm gonna be putting an extra 200 .00 a payday on the payment on this dang credit card thats what their for.I can't get my wife to believe that though.anyway she will love my new telescope,it was either gonna be that or a new shotgun and I don't think she likes target practice. Now that I think about it I think I'll hide all the guns till I get this scope paid for.Wish me luck, man I am gonna catch all heck when she see's our first statement.I'm gonna take over paying the bills for a couple months just to help my wonderful little wifey.Lord help me,Darrell

Darrell:
You need a lot of help. Not because you spend money on optics; nothing wrong with that. But doing it without the wife's approval! Man, you are brave!!
Would she believe you if you told her you won the scope in a raffle? Does she believe in fairies? Is there anything else you can come up with? Because, I am afraid we will never hear from you again, and Darrell, we want to know how that 12 in dob performs for you.
Gang, we gotta think quick and help Darrell live to tell the tale. Any suggetions?

I've been down this road many times. Once in a while, I can give my wife some notice after I have my heart is set on a piece of astro-gear, but usually, it is just not possible with opportunities I see on Astromart. Like the guy said, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Then you just have to take it like a man when she finds out.
It sounds like you have a bad case of aperture fever. If I can offer some encouragement, it is that I found contentment in a 12" scope four years ago, and hope you can do likewise. For others, however, it keeps going until the scope gets too cumbersome, and they start trading down.
Not that aperture cures the spending curse. Big purchases are likely to continue (e.g., tracking platforms, an apo this or that, H-alpha filtered solar scopes, an image intensifying eyepiece, etc.). I think I finally have it licked, but who knows. At least I'm still married!
One last suggestion is to sell some stuff on Astromart when you buy a new expensive toy. It may not balance the checkbook, but your soul will feel better!

I remember two conversations with my wife, paraphrased of course:
(1) Honey, I just found a great deal on a 12" dob for XXX and I am going to get it. Wife: no your not. Me: Yes I am. Wife: No your not. (Notice, I let her get in the last word)
(2) Honey, remember that telescope that I said I was going to get? Well, it's here! (The pearls helped!)

I've read this entire thread and there are a few helpfull ideas and a lot of bravado, but not once did I see where you offer to show her the stars. To solve the situation you need to bring her into the fold and turn her on to the night sky!! Romance her with an evening under the stars and show her things she has never seen. Show her your excitement for these sites to see and how much you enjoy them and express how much you would like her to enjoy them also. After all you are not buying the scope for you alone but for her also.
Well, I hope it works for you cause it didn't work worth a dang for me. Just kidding, actually it did work pretty well, she doesn't scream as long or as loud anymore and as I said in the earier post "Its easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission"
