Almost any of the 8 inch Reflectors such as found in the classifieds under Catadioptric are what I am looking for. By the time I buy a new 5 inch reflector with a tripod, I will have spent as much or more money as buying a used 8 inch "Catadioptric"!

This is true.....and a C8 is a very good all around scope that is good at pretty much all uses, visual, imaging, portability etc. That said I wouldnt say it is excellent at any one specific thing but it does a good job on everything.
