Hi,
Need your advice again!
I promised my son a telescope. He's 8 years old.
Meade is selling a 70mm refractor (ngc 70) for about $60. I don't want to spend alot but dont want to buy junk.
Any opinions about the scope would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

When I took a very brief look at a NGC-70 at a local photography store, I thought the paint job on it looked just a tad chintzy.

If you get one you might consider upgrading to a red-dot finder and getting the kid a subscription to NightSky magazine within a short time of the purchase.

You might also look at the Orion Observer 60 and 70. They both have a red-dot finder. However, a $70 price on a 70mm scope is pretty tough to overlook.

I have several telescopes, but none are semi-APO, APO, or in anyway valuable.

itz,
I recently posted this on another forum in response to a member wondering what type of equipment to buy for a son interested in Astronomy. Reading this thread brought to mind that perhaps the post would merit attention here as well.

"When teaching children whether it is fishing or astronomy the learning curve is
steep enough that they should not have to struggle with inferior equipment as
well. Using decent equipment (it does not have to be the best) reduces
frustration and will lend itself to a more satisfying experience which in turn
can lead to a life long pursuit. Why people buy junk for their kids is beyond
me. You are on the right track cjamescook.
Good luck,
Dan"
