Which mag?

I have the latest issues of both "Sky and Telescope" and "Astronomy" magazines. I was wondering which one is preferred here and why?

I think I like "Astronomy" better but I'm not sure why.

If you could only get one, which one?

TIA.

Personal preference my friend...
Astronomy seems to be easier to read for some, as it does not get as "technical" as S&T... but then again, some prefer S&T for that reason...

For about $10 a month, I would get both... wink

I take Astronomy, for the price. I found a place that sold me the Mag for $18 a year. I bought 3 years worth from them. Made more sense when it was under 1/2 price. smile
I did take both, but found them to be redundant.

Six of one, IMO.

Whichever you get, I strongly suggest that you think about adding Amateur Astronomy as well http://www.amateurastronomy.com/ if you are interested in the hobby itself. Lots of articles about star parties, telescope building, observing, equipment reviews etc. It's all in black and white, and written by amateurs, so it's not as fancy as the glossy rags, but it's the only magazine I have ever subscribed to that I read cover to cover, every single issue. Oh, it only comes out quarterly, so there is also that anticipation between issues. smile

I find I can get most of the information I am interested in that is in the glossies from various websites, so I cancelled my subscriptions to both S&T and Astronomy and only take AA now.

Just my .02...

Well, I admit I'm more confused now than ever. I think the majority is for S&T with Astronomy a close second.

My membership in the local club (NJAA) is due back soon. I think they offer discounts to mags. Maybe I'll wait until then and see how much the discount is. Then, I can get both.

Thanks.

Like Ivan, I also prefer S&T. One reason is their reviews seem more realistic. Also, it seems to be more for people who have more interest in the "hows and whys" of astronomy. Astronomy magazine, on the other hand seems to be for those who aren't as interested in getting into a lot of scientific detail but rather want a decent understanding of what's going on. For a true beginner, I like Nightsky, which really is a good mag for beginners. It would have been nice if it had been published when I was getting started. It would have saved me a lot of frustration. wink At least that the way it all appears to me. grin If I could afford it I would get both.

Hugh

Hugh,

I checked out the Nightsky web site and viewed a few sample articles. It really does look good for a beginner. Just what I need. Oh man, now I gotta get 3 mags!
