"Key details of the deal and the resulting investments include:The Negotiation: President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick negotiated the mining agreement with Kazakhstan's president in late 2025, pushing for U.S.-based Kaz Resources to develop the untapped tungsten reserves."

"The Investment: Within weeks of the negotiations, a firm partly owned by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump took a roughly 20% stake in the Kazakhstan mining project"

"Financial Ties: Simultaneously, Cantor Fitzgerald—the investment bank controlled by the Lutnick family—helped secure hundreds of millions of dollars in new capital for the project's key investors, a move that typically yields millions in fees."

"The U.S. Backing: The project is seeking up to $1.6 billion in U.S. government-backed financing to get the mine off the ground, causing ethics watchdogs to raise concerns over perceived conflicts of interest. The Response: The White House and representatives for the Trump and Lutnick families have defended the arrangement, stating the government's backing is based entirely on national and economic security goals and that the sons serve strictly as passive investors." Like I said in a previous post:  "Corruption running amuck and right out in the open...and no one seems to care." And "If Obama or (Hunter) Biden made (a deal like this) and made 2 billion dollars while in office, mostly from crypto currency, and lost a war with Iran MAGA and their (GOP) minions would be screaming their lungs out about it."

"MAGA and their (GOP) minions"

You mean like the person in this picture?     https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/03/politics/america-250-july-4-national-mall-trump-analysis

Or, do you mean Don Jr & "Grab A Gun" wherein you order your gun online like amazon and it's delivered to your doorstep since it's a safe bet SCOTUS WILL allow it?

Looks like at least one Michigan lawmaker is calling out Trump on the delay of the bridge opening. Good for her. I've liked her since the impassioned speech that went viral that she gave in April 2022 which I posted about in this forum.

https://www.astromart.com/forums/commentary-careful-read-the-terms-of-service/politics/michigan-state-senator-mallory-mcmorrows-speech-yesterday?page=1#post188583

"The delayed opening of a bridge connecting Michigan and Canada is spilling into one of the country's most closely watched Senate races, as Democratic candidate Mallory McMorrow launches the first major effort to turn the controversy into a political liability for U.S. President Donald Trump and Republicans.

McMorrow's new ad, shared first with The Associated Press, accuses Trump of blocking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and suggests he is doing so to benefit a major political donor, building on an anti-corruption message she has sought to make central to her campaign.

She's got my vote.

Pete Butageg said the craziest thing about this is that Mexico was never going to pay for his wall, but Canada did pay for this bridge and he's blocking it.

But Trumpf's buddy owns the old, rapidly deteriorating, narrow and outdated Ambassador Bridge and will lose a lot of money if the new bridge is opened,  so he gave a $million to Trumpf and the opening is put off.

Aside: how is it that important international infrastructure, such as the Ambassador Bridge, is under private, for-profit ownership?

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is jointly owned by the Government of Canada (through the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority) and the State of Michigan. While ownership is shared equally, the Canadian government funded the entire construction cost upfront. Canada will collect toll revenues until its investment is recouped, after which toll profits will be split with Michigan.

Still supposed to open July 27th. Seems about a year late, it's been finished for some time now.

My Canadian friends are not happy with Carney. Tho if he hadn't made some kind of deal with Trump it'll be delayed a lot longer.

Sucks, I've been wanting to ride my bike over. My friend and I actually did that back in the 70's going across the Ambassador Bridge. Can't believe they'd let a couple of 12 year old boys do that back then, we had no ID and certainly no passports. They just asked us where we were from and it was welcome to Canada boys. We had a plan to stuff our high handlebars full of firecrackers to smuggle across but we couldn't find a fireworks store. grin

We do know what's in the new agreement.  Well publicized. The original agreement had Canada getting all the toll money for a couple of decades from which would have been deducted the  debt pay down, ongoing maintenance etc.  We would have kept the profit too.  What little there was. After 15 (or was it 25 years?) the tolls would be split 50/50 and the expenses too.

The 'new' agreement  has us giving  up 50% of the profits from the tolls after expenses from the get-go.

There won't be very much 'profit' from the tolls for many years so, yeah we 'gave up' something to Trump's renegotiation but it is going to be a vanishingly small amount of actual money.

Trump 'won' by going from half of nothing to half of not-very-much.  Carney 'won' by giving up half of not-very-much  and getting the god damn bridge open to let commerce flow which is worth billions to both countries.

Thanks for the clear explanation.   In Trumps mind, he won biggly, and that is everything to a narcissist.   I enjoyed the story from your youth!  😀🧨🎆

Not being able to get along with Canada is like not being able to make friends with a Golden Retriever.
